From Dad, For the Future 1

Lucas,

You are 6 months old now, and you still think I’m funny. Right now it’s easy; I just make silly faces and noises. I’m sure that sooner or later it will take more effort on my part, but for now I’m happy just blowing raspberries. While I don’t expect things to change, and assume you’ll always think I’m the funniest person alive, I accept that there is a possibility, albeit minuscule, that you may someday find me to be annoying and/or embarrassing to be around. If that is the case, remember this: Every fluid and solid that has left your body has, at some point, ended up on my face. So we’re even.

Obviously, you can read now… I’m sure you are even more brilliant than your exceptional parents. I bet you are making us very proud. I hope you like music. Every morning we are listening to the classic rock station, probably more ancient rock now, on the TV. Sometimes, I throw in some jazz. Also, whenever your mother is away, we rock out on the guitars. You enjoy it for a bit, but eventually you get tired of sitting there watching me have all the fun. I’m sure I’ve taught you how to play so we are jammin’ together at this point, which must be awesome!

The other day someone asked me what it’s like now that I have a kid. He wondered if I missed the things I did before we had you… I told him that I didn’t even remember those things, and that nothing I did before could even compare to something as simple as rolling around on the floor with you, much less all the other amazing things you do. You are the most important thing in our lives. We love you more than we could have ever imagined.

Keep on rocking in the presumably free world,

Dad
