6 Months…. half a year…. what?!?

Dear Lucas Walter,

You are now half a year old, seriously, how did this happen?!?   You have changed SO much in this past month.   I don’t even know where to start….. first of all you have a TOOTH!   Ahhhh!  I hope you don’t learn to bite down while nursing. Yikes!  That little tooth is razor sharp, and is causing you some discomfort.  My poor boy, I wish I could take all of your pain away!  You constantly chew on your hands and fingers.  In fact, you chew on anything that you can get into your mouth, including my face!  I think I’m going to start calling you my little Zombiebaby, because any time you come within a foot radius of my face, you grab me by the hair, and divebomb my cheeks, chin, or nose and try to chew on me.  And now your little tooth hurts!  No more chewing on Mommy.

You’ve also learned to sit up on your own!  You still throw yourself backwards when you’re done playing, which might be after 10 minutes, or after 10 seconds, so for now we have to either put pillows behind you, or sit right next to you so you won’t hit your head.   Your balance is good, but not great.  I’m sure in the next month, you’ll completely master this skill.  Just two weeks ago if I tried to make you sit up, you would fall forward and fold in half, but then, all of a sudden, you sat.   That’s how it goes in our house… one day you suddenly have mastered a skill.

FOOD!!!  You had your first food this month too.  I did a lot of research on what the first thing besides breastmilk that we wanted to feed you, and we decided on avocado.  The typical rice cereal that most people do really has no nutritional value, so we wanted to pick something that was not likely to cause an allergic reaction, and was good for you.   Avocado is a super food!  It has lots of excellent nutrients, so we mashed it up with some breastmilk, and sat you in your highchair.  You really didn’t know what to think.   I don’t know if you liked it or not, but you certainly made lots of amusing faces.  You even grabbed the spoon and fed yourself.     Every 3 days we try a new food, (it is recommended to wait 3 days in case you have an allergic reaction to anything, we’ll easily be able to figure out what it was), since then you’ve had bananas, sweet potatoes, peas (you hate peas! So do I, yuck!), and prunes.   You don’t like to be spoon fed, you want to do it yourself.  If we put it in your mouth you will make faces and gag and spit it out, but if we put it on the spoon, and let you put it in your own mouth you will suck and lick it off, and then let us reload the spoon for more.   Such an independent, smart boy!   But oh my goodness it’s messy!  For instance, when we tried peas (both times), you didn’t like it, but your clothes, the table, and your chair definitely did.   Me, you, and Daddy all sit down at the table for family dinner every night.  We strap you in your highchair (which you love), we let you play with your toys a little bit, then you get to eat with us.  We plan on having family dinner together at the table every night until you grow up, and move out of the house, it’s a good thing you love it :)

Over the holidays we got to spend a lot of time with you, which we absolutely loved.  I hate having to work away from you full-time, but I hope one day you’ll understand that Dad and I work so hard to provide you with everything you need, a safe, healthy place to life and the ability to have a fun family experiences.   You got so used to being able to nurse while I was home with you, that you actually refused the bottle when Dad tried to feed you one so you would get your vitamins over the holidays.  It was the first time ever that you have turned down milk.  I was really worried that you wouldn’t eat well when I had to go back to work, but luckily you ended your bottle-strike for Elyse.  Phew!

You’re also rolling over now like a champ!  Sometimes you’ll even do a double roll.   Now tummy time is impossible because you just stick your arm above your head, and throw your leg over, just like Daddy taught you.  You don’t roll from your back to your belly very often, mostly because you hate being on your tummy.   I don’t know how you’ll ever learn to crawl since you won’t stay there longer than 5 seconds!  Silly boy.    Also, new this month, is that sometimes when you’re fussing,  I swear it sounds like you’re saying “Mama!” actually more like MaaaaaaMaaaaaaa.   I know that you don’t really know what you’re saying, but it’s still exciting to hear.

In other big news, you now have a little girlfriend staying at our house with you during the day.  Her name is Rylie.  Rylie is younger than you by 2 months, and 3 minutes.  She’s playing hard to get, but you are not giving up…you like to try to grab her any time you can!   I’m sure you would Zombie-munch her face if you were allowed to.   Elyse told me the other day that Rylie was crying, and you were sitting next to her and gently reached up to touch her face (when normally you would grab and eat), you were worried about your friend.  Such a sweet natured boy.

You just had your 6 Month check-up at the pediatrician’s office, you had some more of your vaccines (NOT a fan!).   You continue to be tall and thin!   You are 28 inches long, and 17 lbs 1 oz.  That makes you taller than 90% of other kids, and heavier than 41% of them.   The doctor said that as you continue to get more mobile and active, you’ll probably drop in your weight percentage a little bit more.  He took one look at how tall and thin Daddy is and said you were built just like him!   He was very happy that you were still drinking all breastmilk, and said we were doing a great job.  It’s always nice to hear someone say we’re doing the right things :)
